Dell FS12-NV7 2U Server Information and Guide

I've got one of these for testing projects from work at home and got more than I bargained for with the time I've spent on it due to the storage handing/Perc 6/i cards.

My particular model came with the following:

  • 2U Rack Mount Server with Rails
  • 2xOpteron 2373 EE (Quad Core, there is a 6-core version that can be found at times)
  • 16GB RAM
  • 2 x 250GB Seagate SATA
  • 2 x Dell Perc 6/i (horrible and a nightmare to work with) based on LSI Logic 1078 - no JBOD mode so you have to use a command or enter the BIOS each time you reinsert a disk or add a new one.
  • 12 Hot Swap SATA bays (this is why I bought it, for storage/testing and convenience of front hot-swap bays)
  • Gigabyte 3CESL1 motherboard. b2b.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx
  • Gigabyte/Newisys 8200 Backplane that has 3 SFF-8484 connectors at the back (each SFF-8484 provides 4 internal SATA connections).  Each Dell Perc 6/i has 2xSFF-8484 connectors so only 3 ports between the two cards are used.

Storage MegaSAS/Perc 6/i issues and no JBOD

I thought it would be easy to just plug in SATA drives from the motherboard directly but the backplane prevents this and if you removed it you would basically lose your true hotswap abilities.

These Perc 6/i's suck as mentioned, they can't do JBOD and need some kind of battery for proper performance.  The are some Dell SAS 6/iRs I found for a good price which can be flashed to other LSI models and may do JBOD out of the box (the Perc 6/i's will break if you try this, DO NOT follow a guide from Unraid or you'll brick your Perc 6/i like I did).

I am also looking for a 4xSATA (host) to SFF-8484 (target) cable so I can try using 4 ports from the motherboard in the front chassis.  Note the term (host) and (target) is important with these cables, host is the motherboard/card side and the target is the drive side (apparently if you get this backwards the drives will not work and many sellers apparently don't know the difference so people often get the wrong cables).

Noise

This server is a bit loud for the home environment but being a 2U it's not as loud as a screaming 1U.  The fans are like an airplane when powering the system on but then they quiet down (contrary to complaints of other similar models of server).  This server has run for days now without shutting down or overheating (this was a complaint too-perhaps I have a never BIOS or it is more of an issue with 1U versions).

To keep the noise down I unplugged the 3 internal loud system fans that cool the cards and CPUs.  I placed heatsink fans from some old AM2 heatsinks ontop and literally screwed them in and they are secure and keep the CPUs just as cool.  I can't close the case otherwise the fans make a screeching sound as the hit the top of the case.   My long-term plan is to buy some 1U low-profile Socket-F heatsinks and keep the same fans on top, that way there will be plenty of room to clear the case cover.

Some forums have said these are basically rebranded Gigabyte servers.

It is definitely true that the motherboard is Gigabyte
