Creating a Socket based user MariaDB:

CREATE USER 'youruser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH unix_socket;

Creating a Socket based user in MySQL:

CREATE USER 'youruser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH auth_socket;
 

We can see the difference is that in Maria it is called "unix_socket" and MySQL "auth_socket".
